I HAVE A AN 89 WESTFALIA AND WONDER IF SOMEONE CAN EXPLAING THE COOLANT SYSTEM. I KNOW THERE IS A COOLANT TANK IN THE ENGINE AND A RESEVOIR BEHIND THE NUMBERPLATE.
WHERE DO YOU PUT THE COOLANT (RED FOR VW I HAVE BEEN TOLD)? INTO THE ENGINE OR INTO THE RESEVOIR. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE RESEVOIR BY A MECHANIC. IT OVERHEATS AND A SCREW HAS TO BE OPENED BEHIND A GRILL ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. NOW THERE IS NO COOLANT IN THE RESEVOIR AND I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL
for a start please dont use caps.when the engine is cold the tank with the blue or black cap(if its a black one consider changing it for a blue one from brickwerks) must be full to the brim.the tank behind the number plate needs filling to the max mark..

Hi. Thanks for your help and i am sorry about the caps! Can i just clarify that both the tank in the engine and the tank behind the number plate both need to be filled?
I have looked online for a diagram to explain how this system works but i cannot find it. is it that the water is constantly keeping the van engine cool and when it stops there should be liquid in both of the tanks?
mate.the tank behind the number plate needs filling to the max mark.the other tank should be filled to the brim.. if the engine needs it.water from the tank behind the numberplate gets sucked into the other tank.the other tank when it reaches a certain pressure releases some pressure into the numberplate tank.this will only happen if the blue/black cap is working correctly.
