Just failed MOT on a few things including my headlamp alignment. They wanted me to buy new ones. Before I do, I wanted to find out if there is any easier (and free) way of aligning my current headlamps manually.
there are adjustment screws to allow you position the lights, take the grill off so you can see them easily and lubricate with some wd40 or similar then very gently try turning them each way to free them and get them moving, figure out which one does what to each lamp and maybe make a note for yourself, wait till dark go and park opposite a wall about two full car length back amd then adjust them till top of beam is waist high and two beams merge in middle and offside beam edge is not outside the offside by more than a foot and they should be about right, if they fail you can ask them to point out where they think they should be pointing and do a quick readjust
If they are left hand drive light units you will have to fit beam deflectors/obscurers and some mot guys won't accept them
My garage let me adjust mine 1/2 way through the MoT! But then I had bought the vehicle off the garage owner's wife and he was an old school mate.
Never heard of buying new headlights instead of aligning them though. Sounds like they are trying to rip you off.

Thats what I thought! So I said no to new lights. Thanks for the info guys. Will wait for dark!
Did everything you said to do. Couldnt find anything wrong, although im no mechanic, took it to another place and they passed it without comment on the lights!
Just shows how many shifty characters there are around!
