Which Tailgate Gas Strut is Knackered

Post by sorebums »

The tailgate on my Standard T25 won't stay up - when I raise it, it slowly sinks in a dignified manner - like watching a boat sink.

I've detached each strut in turn. One looks clean and I can press it in 3 inches or so and it springs back fast. The other looks skanky but is almost impossible to compress.

Which one should I replace - or should I stop being a tight-wad and replace both?

Thanks

Simon

Stop being a tight a*** and replace them both!

The one you can compress is the more knackered one, i put new on mine (from Jokerdub) and I couldn't compress them at all....but I am just a feak and weeble woman!

Instant fix for the tight wads - piece of copper piping - just a bit shorter than the silver extension arm. Slides over the black bit when shut - holds open hatch by wedging between top and bottom of the silver bit.

We had some old piping in the house - works so well we haven't ordered new struts yet!

New struts about £25 a pair iirc

Easy peasy fit, i did mine all on my own!
Find a piece of wood to hold the door up, take of strut, replace, repeat with other side, remove wood.
Close door, open door and get smacked under chin as it shoots into the air with the power of 3 weetabix.

Jobs a goodun.

maybee not for the tight wads! the way copper is going at the moment you might soon be weighing them in for scrap and buying new struts!! i'll have to see about the pile of cable i've got in the garage! :D
