Propshaft UJ Confusion???

Post by keeno »

Just ordered a new UJ for my propshaft and it arrived all well and good. Removed the offending UJ (the one closest to the front and not attached to the rubber damper) only to find that the UJ at this end is a different size to the one at the gearbox end! The opening at the U shape is 54 mm as opposed to the opening at the U on the gearbox end being 46 mm approx. Now I have another prop which I removed from another Syncro some time ago and the UJs are the same size at both ends (46 mm at the U). Is this normal to have two different UJs at either end? Not seen this before or is this some kind of anomaly?

Another point was that the UJ at the gearbox end is held in by circlips as per the norm, but at the front end the bearing cups are held in by a peened method as opposed to traditional circlips. Is there something weird going on with this prop? Van is a 1990 Tristar if that makes any difference... Regards, Matt

Didn't know that, assumed same... thought both ends were peened in.

Need to wait for someone who sees a lot more Syncros than me to respond...

Mine are both circlips and both the same size. Where did your new one come from?
Some things do get re-designed better than the originals though.
What a long strange trip it's been

keeno, I might guess that your prop has been refurbed and it's not an uncommon repair to cut-off and weld a completely new joint on, the flange being a std DIN affair I imagine (as these things often are)
To those with the equipment and jigs for accuracy, it's a quicker fix.
