Changed the gearbox oil in the 2.6 at last

Post by silverbullet »

It needed doing:
1.because 1-2 and 2-3 were poor when cold and less than good when hot.
2. Despite having a full VWSA service history up to 2003, I was worried about how much oil was left inside.
The drain plug was a bit tight, but I used a tried and tested method. Apply only hand pressure to the jack and it works a treat:

Quite a decent quantity of dark bronze-coloured oil in the pan, and this on the plug:

Not too much fir but those two chunks are the tips of synchro-hub teeth  Could be worse, I guess.
I refilled using the "oil enema" technique  2 foot of garden hose and a funnel. Magic. It got to 3.7 litres then started to drip, so I quickly jacket the offside of the van and got it up to 4 litres. Filling plug in sharpish and clear up. How much oil did I drain out? 3 litres - just.
Went for a spin around the block, much better, even from cold. 1-2 still needs respect but it's done 120k of hard mileage in 15 years.
When I got back home, I emptied out the tools, oil barrel etc and noticed something. I looked again. £$^&*(@>!
GL4, but EP90! I was so chuffed with the price I got on 25litres I hadn't noticed...Well it's one side of 75-90 and it drives OK, so we'll see what it's like in the winter - if it hasn't come out by then for some attention and improvement of the "limited" variety.

Plugs ok, but I think thems bits of fourth or fifth gear teeth, put in some gl4 75w/90 before winter and drive with a modicum of gentility

I've kept the two bits of shrapnel - I'll post them to you, Aidan for further analysis! I do treat the 'box with respect and as it does a lot of "hot" motorway cruising in 5th with a 4-mile warm-up, I thought that 90 grade would be ok. Better than running around with it 3/4 full of degraded and contaminated lapping paste...
Still a ruddy daft mistake though  There's enough for 5 more fills!
I should be able to use it up on the fleet
