How do I remove the Roof Lining

Post by xmillie »

Can anybody tell me how to remove the roof lining from my standard (unmodified) T25 van without cutting it or damaging it - this is so it can be refitted after some roof work?

Is it a perforated vinyl headliner? If so, you just have to take your time. It is glued on around the edges so its pretty hard to get it off without ripping.

Hi;

Thanks for the prompt reply.

It is NOT a perforated vinyl liner - it is a cloth liner, I suspect that it is not the original lining, it looks like the original lining may have been replaced.

Hi;

Thanks for the 'relevant threads' - I have had a look at them and none describe how to remove the roof lining.

Is the lining mounted on a metal frame that can be 'sprung' out?

Are there fixing screws?

Regards

Hi;

Yes, prior to posting the question, I spent some time searching for the answer on the internet and on this forum - I could not find a description of how to remove the lining, so I decided to post a question.

No what I meant was have you used the forum 'search' facility - comprehensive as the Wiki is it doesn't contain everything. The search facility can take a bit of practice getting used to in order to find specific threads. There's choices of which forum(s), topic title only, topic title and posts etc. And then you have to try and anticipate how someone else would describe what you want cos if you use a different descriptive word it won't even bring it up.

Hi;

Well, I tried searching this site using several different keywords, it thru up a lot of posts, I had a look at them and none specifically described how to remove the lining. I am not a 'search' expert, so there may be a post out there, but I could not find it.....

thanks for your interest

The original roof lining has loops which a series of sprung steel rods pass through and then these locate under tension in plastic plugs either side in the bodywork. The edges are then turned under and glued using a Evo-Stik like contact adhesive.

How we are supposed to second-guess how an individual DIY retro-fitted roof lining has been done is beyond me.

As far as I know, on a factory fitted headliner, the material is wrapped and glued over the metal lip under the front and rear windscreen.
Over the sliding door and the cab doors, there is a length of steel strip spot welded to the body. The headliner is pushed under this strip and the strip hammered closed to pinch the fabric and hold it in place.

Hi Ian and Boatbuilder;

OK, looking at the roof liner it seems that it is fitted as Ian suggests - a series of hoops sprung into the body with the edges turned under the strip - so perhaps this is the original factory fittted liner. The liner is in good condition, but I need to work on the roof without ruining the liner. So, I assume to remove the liner, I carefully prise out the edges and then I can remove the 'sprung' rods.

Thank you all for your comments, at least I now know how the roof liner is constructed, so I now have a fighting chance of removing it without damaging it.

Many Regards
