upper balljoint removal -wont budge

Post by bug-er »

Hi
I need to replace the upper balljoints on my van, I have done the nearside no problem but the offside is proving troublesome. I have been using the following

but it will not budge, been hitting it for ages and ages, from different angles etc, Even tried heating up the upright with a blowtorch but it won't budge. Any suggestions please cause its annoying the hell out of me.

thanks

I take it you have got the nut off and are trying to extricate the tapered pin from the upright? if so then hold a lump hammer oor other heavy dead piece of steel on one side of the upright holding the pin and severly beat the life out of the opposite side with a 3 pound hammer or such, do this a good number of times then swop over and beat it up the other way,
usually shocks it off.if not then stick your splitter in and hit it propper hard with a 3 pounder and keep repeating, iit will come off, you shouldnt need heat, if you have oxy/ acety then great but a blow torch not much good.

Rozzo, I think they are trying to extricate the pin from the upright(hence use of splitter in picky) rather than joint from upper wishbone.

nah they're trying to remove the top balljoint which is on a taper. nothing else holding it. if you twist it to break the seal it will flop out.
the bloody things usually come lose when you try to undo the nut

he bloody things usually come lose when you try to undo the nut

if you can keep the weight on the suspension whilst undoing the nut then the joints should stay in place and not turn, then as advised shock the thing by impact resonance on the cast upright

plus gas or rost-off can help

if the nut turns the joint and won't come off then you can cut through the thing just above the nut, it usually comes down a few threads then sticks on the rusty threads, and it will then come out easy, I know that isn't the issue here, just saying...
