water hose

Post by alkers »

Hi all.

I have a 1982 devon conversion. there has never been a water bottle in the van, so have never checked out the sink etc. However now I am thinking of trying to find one to fit - but something crossed my mind...

At the end of the hose (the end that joins the water bottle), it goes upwards through the cupboard then back down to the bottle. When the van isn't in use, this seems to suggest that water will collect in the section between the sink and the cupboard, stagnate, algae etc. Having not tested the pump etc. Can anyone tell me how you get rid of this bit of water please.

thank you!

Hi, can nobody tell me what happens to this last bit of water? Surely there must be a way of emptying it - this is a professional conversion after all!!

I don't have a Devon so I'm a bit confused by your description, can you post some photos of the plumbing arrangements? Isn't there usually a water container in the boot for Devon conversions?

Hi, been away for a while, sorry to not reply sooner
I haven't got a pic to hand. The hose runs from the sink (behind the driver seat ) to the boot. It goes behind the standard level cupboards, but then when it goes through the rear wardrobe is rises up and through a hole near the top of the cupboard to the boot where the water bottle stands. I think it has to be this high because when a water bottle stands there it would be taller than where the hose started (because of the raised engine floor).

Because there is a nozel on the end of the hose for water bottle attachment, it is not possible to pull the hose back through the hole and empty any water that has collected there.

I haven't attached a bottle yet, so I am not sure that a problem will exist. It just seems logical to me that the last dregs of water will have no where to go.

Thanks

Is there a water pump and is it the submersible type (goes inside the water container) or an in-line pump (fitted to the pipeline somewhere, but not inside the water container)?

Sounds like the only way to empty that bit of pipe would be to disconnect it at the tap and drain it at that end perhaps?

Alternatively get a water container, some Puriclean and mix this with water in the container to the correct solution, then pump it through to the sink and leave it lying in the pipe for a day or two. Then empty the water container and fill with fresh water and keep pumping it through into the sink to give the pipe a good rinse out.

Might be worth cutting the pipe and inserting a drain tap for future use though?

Just a few ideas. If no good you could always start another thread; FAO: Devon conversion owners, you might get more useful responses that way!

Get a water bottle that has an outlet at the bottom so that there is a continuous rise to the tap?

Algae needs light to form.
The pump is a submersible type.
The pipe won't empty it's designed not to. So that as you switch the tap on the water delivery is instant.
It is like this on my water system and mine is an Auto sleeper the pipe is always charged.

Let the tap run for a couple of seconds if it is a bother.
use puriclean to sterilise the pipe

Thanks for the replies.

There is a window in our wardrobe - so this will allow light to the hose (although the hose isn't see through). Maybe algae will build up.

But it seems water is meant to be left in the pipe!? Guess a flush through before and at the end of the camping season is a new chore once we re-attach.

I haven't a bottle though, so will look into the bottom ended ones.

Many Thanks :ok

We only had mould/algae problems with our Devon's water supply when we first got it - it had been sitting unused for ages. I scrubbed the storage container with very dilute bleach solution and ran a very dilute solution of bleach through the pipes. Some people use baby bottle cleaning solution.
No problems since, as long as it's used from time to time. If you don't use it over the winter, empty the tank, which may help.

Ah now Ackers reading your second posting I was expecting the dummy to be thrown out with the water bottle, cept you havent a bottle to throw :rofl

Right now, Kev summed it up, I used to have a devon, same set up, heres how it should be, in the rear there should be an upright water bottle on wheels(about 4-5 gallon?) fastened to the o/s panal with a strap or whatever, with an opening on the top into which you drop your hose with the water pump attatched , thats it,
Its not really a chore to change clean you water no more than brushing your teeth, I know what you mean about tainting the water, algae is not a big problem, every month I drop my water and refill, mild milton to flush once a year, some dont .
thats about it really. if you cant find a devon water tank/bottle then anything clean/suitable that will fit.
