In all the time I've had the van I have only ever heard the fan come on once and that was when the engine had been running for a long long time in a stationary van.

I have some kind of extra fan fitted for hot country use that runs off a switch under the dash. I have seen this discussed on US Vanagon sites also. I've never used it in anger but I suppose I could if the temp was climbing.

1.7d na KY engine.

cheers i'll go down to gsf,
the reason i'm worried is my temp guage went up to 3/4 of the way on friday in that hot weather and no sign of any fan movement so i shat myself, luckily the traffic started moving and she didnt blow but think i'd better change the little buggers.

ah, so is there anyway of testing these switches apart from getting the engine really really really warm?
(and at what point on the temp guage do you start getting nervous)

I get nervous when its in the red.

If you can remove the switch, then rig a rudementry circuit with the switch in a pool of water that can be heated maybe.

has the fan been checked to see if it runs out of the thermo loop
