ipod amp - options?
I still have the orginal 1984 stereo cassette player in the dash and it works (ish). We don't want to replace it however, as it would detract from the orginal features of the van.
I'd like to put some speakers in the back (someting low key) and install a small amplifier with socket for an ipod. It would need a volume control also.
Internet search has not come up with anything inparticular. Just wondered if anyone else has done something similar? Don't really want a full on car stereo/cd player - just looking for a small discreet amplifier that ideally can be located within the offside cupboard with a face (with the volume and plug) on display.
Thanks

Quite a few mini amps for cars and motor cycles on e bay. mostly from china but the odd one based in UK. Was looking for one to amplify my flip down tv but got a sony source selector from e bay which enabled me to direct the audio through the the radio speakers. Look up mini car amp on e bay?

Also an audio input that fits along the radio aerial and can be picked up by tuning to the right station

Re: ipod amp - options?
We recently fitted one of these into a dashboard to allow switching between 3 input sources http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-WAY-AUDIO-VIDEO ... 45efadaf8d" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) including a discreet hidden mp3 input. We took it apart so just the selector dial is showing thru the dash.
If the old tape player doesn't have phono outputs places like Halfrauds sell adapters that go on the end of the old speaker outputs then buy a 4 way amp and you can get 4 powered outputs. If u then also fit component speakers in the doors this really helps the vans sound without deafening u!

ooh, nice! is it any good? I've got a cheap little thing that's supposed to transmit an FM signal from my MP3 to the car radio, but it's frustratingly pants.

Re: ipod amp - options?
I have a similar setup to this-
I got a lovely old sony amp from ebay for around £40 that fits just nicely under the front passenger seat.
I just plug pod right into that and use the volume on the ipod. Amps will have a volume control on them that you can set down a bit so it doesn't blow your head off if you accidentally plug in your ipod at full volume.
You'll find the sound quality using an amplifier will far far far surpass that of using your old headunit.

I've got the cassette adaptor thing which i use with my iphone. The problem is though that you get the awful crackle interference patterns that nearly deafen you when they kick off every few minutes so you have to keep the phone in airplane mode which is a pain in the a***.
Our other car has the jack plug adaptor and we never have problems with that.
