been doing a few jobs on the van as we now have the evernings (light and warmth) to work on it, as the forum seams a little slow at the moment thought i would show you the findings! may be worth cheaking your stering coupling if they look any thing like mine did?

Good point, also i noticed when i drove mine from Scotland the stearing was a little wonder-y.
Now i not expectign Lotus Esprit here but is there some adjustment somwhere?

Check the rubbers as Niel has pointed out.
Poly rack bushes will remove some slop.
Set the wheel alignment, if you raise a 3 you end up with a lot of positive castor, to the point of them wandering about.
Reduce the castor, set camber then tracking, that should keep it reasonably straight.

Simon... thinking out loud here, could these be made out of polyurethane or is polyurethane only suitable for bush/bump stop application? How would polyurethane behave in that application?

It's worth changing the top hat rubbers at the bottom of the column too, only a quid or so each and they made a noticeable difference to my steering.

for air cooled vw's beetles ghia's etc they are avalible in pollyuethane, they look like this

they or the ones above are about the same price as new vw onws from tps, i am gussing that the ones that came off my were the origional,

DO NOT BUY THESE FROM JUST KAMPERS!
I had one that I luckily noticed before it split in half, it was made of just rubber with no inbuilt fabric strengthening, potentially leathal cheap aftermarket crap.
