Hi

Im new to vw's but here what I have found out myself...

Yours is same as mine.. 1.6d 1982 d non turbo

The 2 senders are top(low) and bottom (high) speed thermosensors for the cooling fan - theres a diagram and wiring diagram on the downloads section

The top one is 2 pin and switches a high current to the relay behind the fuse box at about 95oc - the lower sensor is x2 pin and pulses the relay switch to activate the 2nd - higher speed at 105 oc - follow the pink ish wires from the fan motor to the relay

to test the ciucuit/relay ..... ign on - pull wires off the pins and connect top 2 and low speed kicks in - and with that running then connect lower 2 to run high speed.

Not 100% sure if the later 3 pin sensor from jk can be wired to activate both speeds... give them a call but sure someone will be along son here to confirm

im just about to install an over ride switch for both speeds via a relay in the cab for peace of mind.

Hope this helps

Matt - brighton

Im sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to confirm or correct in case im wrong

thx matt..good news the fan unit does work !! it does exactly what you say it does! confirms my suspitions of an air lock due to leaks etc ..and water not reaching senders to switch fan on!..so all i need now is info on whether i can wire up a single sender rad so hopefully someone will come up with that one ...then i can sort out a new un and get back on the road!!

Thats good news,

I have had a few diesel motors in the past (not vw) and under normal operating conditions found it rare for the fan to be activated....

Its pretty straightforward to by pass the thermoswitches and have a 2 stage switch in the cab - the high current low speed wired (thick ones) will need switching on via a bosch relay - hi speed activated by the relay behind the fuse box so easy to wire that one too.

The thermoswitches will still work but at least you can override them if your 6th sense says to do so

All the best

matt

thinking about it ...hope someone can put me straight ....both switches have 2 wires....would one of each be a live ? if so could those not connect together ...so i would be left with 3 wires to match the 3 pins on a single switch rad...1 live ,1 high, one low speed???

The Radiator you are talking about is a CS type Rad, it has an extra core so is slightly thicker, you can get a recon from Brickwerks but its £250! I have managed to get a quote for a recore of about £100 ish which is the best I have managed so far, so if you need a new Rad look around your area for a company that does recores they will fix your existing Rad. :ok
