1y 1.9D engine sump

Post by Kwinpenny »

Hi all,

My old 1Y lump has died so I've got another one, but the sump is a lot smaller (its from a SEAT Ibiza) anyone got any ideas on whether it needs changing? or if it'll be fine as is - I'm hoping its just a more modern lump and is good to go...

Cheers

you must use the sump from the engine that was originally in your van, a 1y sump is useless and will kill your engine in 10 seconds flat........and use a new sump gasket, preferably a rubber type one, the cheapest place i found is http://www.veedubmachine.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If the engine 'aint in the back, it's cack!

I'm half way through swapping the engines... Bought a new sump gasket, but it has a metal 'baffle plate' built in (which the new engine from a SEAT ibiza has too). The old 1Y engine just had a conventional gasket - any ideas whether the new one with the baffle will be fine, or whether I should send it back and find another gasket? Obviously I'm swapping the oil pickups/pumps as they are each designed for their specific sump....

Hope someone can help, cheers...

I didn't use the baffle plate some people do so I imagine if you have got it fit it,

you might find difficulty in getting the bell housing to sump bolts to go in if you use the 1y gasket...i did, so i bought a standard one for the 1.6d from brickwerks and it went on a treat.others have kept the baffle one though and had success with the bolts.

Thanks for the info guys - I thought I'd ask rather than wreck an engine :-) although I was pretty sure it wouldnt matter. Seeing as I've already got it, I'll go ahead and fit it today - hoping to complete the build/clean/paint today and get the engine in tomorrow - WOOHOO!

thanks again guys.

when i failed to get the lower bolts to line up i still ran the van without them in and it didnt seem to matter,but after a few months i decided to put the standard gasket on for the sump ..just to be sure :ok

also ...remember to change the oil strainer from the old engine as the new one wont be the right angle for the sump :ok

Thanks for all the help guys. The engine is in with all the relevantparts swapped. :D

Mind you the new 'ibiza' engine has a longer dipstick tube, but goes into the changed sump much less than the old one. Any ideas on oil capacity to use? Also do the dipstick tubes unscrew? Nearly there now, soon MOT tiime too!

A totally dry engine as in no oil will take 4.5 litres just put a pop mark on the dipstick for future reference

Thanks again army phil - for reference guys ask Phil about 1Y conversions - he's THE MAN! (alternatively, ask me! as I've almost completed the job now)
