Hi guys... it's been so long since I first visited this site that I had to re-register; be that as it may, and at the risk of having the sky fall in on me by all you VW devotees...
I have access to a totally free (no, I ain't gonna nick it) Ford 2.9l V6, which I'd like to think would fit in my hi-top camper. Physically, it looks like it will, but has anyone on here fitted this beast? If so, I'd be grateful for any info in adaptor plates, etc. and pro's and con's...
Careful of Winkler,
They can't speak a word of English and have a tendency to waste your time.
GB Engineering used to make them but stopped. Last time I check was over a year ago so they may have started making them again.
the guy with the v6 was called Extreme, well that was his user name..his in reality name is Neil.....Steve 8090 may have his contact details as he lived nearby
Thanks guys...
Who/what/where is GB Engineering? I can't find a website for them.
I am grateful for your responses, but I was hoping that someone who had carried out this conversion might respond with info on degrees of difficulty... there has to be more to it than just an adaptor plate! Like exhaust configurations... mountings.. the weight of the engine (compared with the DG)... etc...etc..
I have read numerous engine replacement posts on here, and I note that refrence is often made to having to change the flywheel. May be a silly question, but what's wrong with keeping the flywheel that goes with the donor engine? Surely the flywheel is 'matched' to that engine... as is its starter motor. Or have I got it all wrong?
The flywheel has to work with a clutch cover plate that will go in the VW bellhousing and also accept the VW centre disc so the VW-splined input shaft will work with the non-VW engine etc combination.
In many cases when an engine swap is completed it's to a Golf motor - these have a sort of 'back to front' flywheel arrangement - hence it must be changed for the T25 diesel one.
You are right - the fitment of an adaptor plate is actually a minor component of the engine install.
With a new-ish Ford V6 your biggest challenge will be the wiring.
If u want the ins and outs of this conversion give us a call. There are pros and cons to it(one major being very high feul consumption)This in the eightys was a very common conversion in SA.There were even companeys like JT conversions who cast their own bellhousings for these engines to fit the VW gearbox.U do get a lot of nice power from it and a lovely sound.
Thanks again guys for your responses.
Russell: I'll be giving you a call during next week, hopefully.
The engine, btw, is from a Scimitar which has been a (failed) restoration project for the last 10 years or so. The guy has decided he hasn't got time to continue, and is basically giving it all away! The whole thing has been in his garage for all that time, and the clock reads 82K. I don't know the year of the car, but the engine is carb'ed, so no electrickery stuff to worry about! I figure it could be worth spending a few bob if necessary on an engine to get me up hills quicker!
