how fast do you go? petrol boxer 1.9 vroom vroom ..

Post by xpress »

I was just wondering what peoples top speed is. 1.9 petrol boxer. i seem to average 55/60mph on the motorway. i don't like taking it over that and i just meander along with the trucks in the crawler lane. it takes a bit longer to get there but that's life lol. What's your average speed and what's comfortable for your engine?

seems ok for me, cruised at this speed and went to hastings and back from kingston surrey and it must have done 30 quid in petrol. 180 miles round trip, that's about 60 miles for a tenner.

Mine is happy sitting at just under an indicated 70 on the motorway, sat nav says it's about 63/64 real mph, but it will happily sit at 80, although I swear I can see the fuel gauge move if I do  vans a 1.9 caravelle with 5 speed box. Now I've checked the fuel lines on top of the tank and I'm happy to brim it without risk of leakage I've done an average of 24mpg over the last 3 tanks - thats a mix of pootling along country A roads at 50-60, commuting into Leicester at rush hour every day for a couple of weeks and a few longish motorway journeys.

My figures are very similar to Mikes.

Mine is a 4 speed DG Tin Top

I did once run at a steady 75 mph for much of a 100 mile trip home when I was in a hurry and it felt fine, it sounds ok at 80 too but I wouldn't do that often !! Can't afford the fuel it uses and don't want to stress the engine (though I am lucky in seeming to now have a very good, quiet engine, touches wood !!)

When I bought my Westie my mate was tailing me in my Nissan and he said I was getting it up to 90 on some stretches of the M6. Never had it up to that speed since (nor do i want to) tend to keep it around 55-60 on the open road and 5mph on the roundabouts!

I've our's up to 85 mph, with a mix of laughter and nerves, last year came back from Devon to Leeds at between 70 -75 on one tank of fuel, but mostly do around 65-70 on motorways unless its windy, then go slower.

I usually go around 65 MPH in my 1.6TD, but up to 75 for short burst of overtaking. Seems to hold speed on hills better at 65 than 55. Maybe this is just gearing.

I usually try to keep below 70mph on long trips. If i stick to 65mph I think i'm getting somwhere between 33-35mpg.
Had it off of the vw clock a few times but 107mph on the sat nav once in a different country.

I'm quite happy to cruise along at 55 - 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways - thats plenty fast for me in the old girl. Anything above this and its too noisey even with the stereo cranked up and the foo fighters playing :P She can do 60 - 65 mph to over take if she has to, but you defo see the needle head south if you do.

Lets face it, if you wanted speed you would have got yerself a margarine tub on wheels with go faster stripes!

At 55 - 60 mph you get a really good persepective on life - and afterall 'its a lifestyle not a vehicle' as I tell people (and Mrs italianjob rolls her eyes everytime I say that  )

Seem to be getting 28mpg on decent runs ie over 50 miles in distance. Got a 4 speed 1.9 DG wbx. So put yer feet up and live life in the slow lane man :ok

You want to be cruising at minimum of 60mph on motorways or you are dicing and getting boxed in by lorries. IMHO!

Get your door cards and trim panels off and stick some flashing tape (or Dynomat of you're rich) in there, best mod I've done to my van - at 70 I can have a conversation with the kids in the back seats without shouting, makes the doors sound like a golf when you shut them as well :D

My 1.9 DG Hi TOP likes sitting at an indicated 75 ( very accurate on gps ) It must be just "on cam " and only needs about 1/4 throttle to maintain this speed, If I drop down to 65 then I have to apply more throttle to maintain the speed .

I have yet to fix the mirror folding in issue that seems to affect all these vans so I prefer to stay out in the middle lane/outer lanes and do less lane swapping.

Flip that's good :ok

107 MPH and 33-35 mpg @ 65mph 8)

What motor is that then ?

Perhaps more importantly who services it ? (diy ?)
