steel water pipes

Hi,
I have a 14" syncro van. Last night I looked underneath and saw water gushing out from the point where the steel water pipes go into the engine bay. I think one of the pipes has split. The water pipes were pretty corroded. Has anyone changed these? Any tips? Bentley states that you need to drop the petrol tank. Can it be done without this? Any comments welcome, thanks.

Have a look at JK website they do a 4 piece kit for the T25's (not sure of syncro but could be adapted no doubt) in Stainless 4 piece to eliminate removal of the Fuel Tank complete with joining pipes
Halfords also do some long general purpouse bendy rad hoses you can cut the pipe back to good and wack one in for a quick fix best bet is to replace pipes and give the system a really good flush out, reverse flush the system and get all the old crud out of the system then all you have to do is bleed it look in wiki for that if unsure how

On a 2wd you definately have to drop the tank even if you do use the 4 piece stainless ones - I'e got them on mine but I bought them from Gunzl in germany - just behind the xmember at the back of the tank the pipes are held on/together with a big old jubilee clip, I spent a good hour trying to wiggle/force them out. I can't picture the syncro tank at the moment but if the pipes run above it then I can't see how you'd change them without dropping it.

Just to bring this up to date - I've stripped out all of the old pipes and the heater hoses which were getting pretty thin. On my syncro I was able to do this without removing the radiator and without dropping the petrol tank. Now to fit the new ones...

my tank was not dropped when i replaced mine with the jk stainless ones..

Ok - now I've hit a snag
the water pipes at the front of the engine (DG from february '85) are also badly corroded

Also...it has a Webasto auxilliary heater fitted which has metal water pipes that cross the top of the engine. See image at

Nothing like those pipes in the 2006 Webasto catalogue - probably custom jobs. Replace with silicon hoses? (assuming that fittings can be re-used as spigots)

I've looked through the bbw46 spare parts catalogue and there are no metal pipes listed at all - they must be a custom or vw job. It's unusual but not unheard of to have the water heaters in the t25s.
