Gearbox doom

Post by meehaja »

So, my 2001 golf (the so called reliable car in the family) leaked some oil the other week that didn't smell like engine oil. That puzzled me, now it wont stay in third and struggles to shift into 4th. Also quite noisy with a whistley sound under acceleration. Quick google suggest this is a known fault with Golfs of that age and the gearbox housing is cracked and it is eating itself. unfortunate. How do you get rid of a car with no gearbox? Is it scrap only? Ho w much will that cost to scrap? is it worth breaking before scrapping (the rest of the car works well?) Help, I've always found buyers for my knackered old cars!

Get a new box and bash it in? Mk4 I take it?

What engine size/spec is it?

yep common prob when they get a few miles on them. The diff are riveted together and as it wears it developes play and then starts to rub on the gearbox casing and eventually wears it away and leaks oil and then knackers the box. Rebuilt box is about £500 ish + fitting and poss clutch replacement. You could go s/hand route or just try to sell as spares repair. Worth nothing only its weight to the scrap man unless desirable tdi or gti but guessing its a 1.6 petrol. theres plenty of people who would happily take it off your hands for some money. Golfs are still very popular and good.

yup 1.6 petrol. its a shame as everything else is spot on, i've never had a car without rust before! Buy a citroen C3 for the wife tommorow, hoping he takes my knackered golf as a PX otherwise its off for ebay then scrap I fear! does the scrap man mind if you gut the interior? Could make some nice seats for the van! Stereo system is good as well! Any other bits I should salvage?

if the rest of the golf is good, why not try to sell as spares or repair, would still be worth decent money even though the box is knackered, don't just take to bits and scrap the rest. seriously someone will pay money for that, specialist vw breakers etc you would be chucking £ away in my opinion. but if you are to break it, absolutely everything onit is worth something, carpets, door panels, clips, clocks lights, body panels, axle, brakes, subframe, but you will need masses of storage and quite abit of time to take it apart properly and sell the bits. Why is repairing it out of the question?
