mTDI'ing 1Z Audi 80

Post by Tobster »

Hi all.
I've arrived here after some desperate googling, there seems to be a lot of mTDI knowledge here.

I was hoping to hybridise my Audi 80's Bosch VP-37 pump with components from a Peugeot 306's VE pump. Someone had suggested it could be as easy as swapping the tops over in place... fat chance.

So it looks like my only option with what I've got, if it's possible, is to try to completely replace the stock pump with the 306's Bosch VE, perhaps swapping some of the parts from the VP-37 over. It looks like it would fit, but I don't know if the sprocket will fit or locate correctly, or if the timing & fuelling will be close enough for it to run properly/reasonably.

I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can give me, it seems a bit of a gray area.

:) Hi , it all depends on the Peugeot pump that you have and how the pumps cold start timing advancement is operated/camplate lift might be the same ( early tdi about 3.09mm ) but not as aggressive ,also have to think about the internal working pressure , if its a late pump it might be a good base , does it have a lower solenoid valve fitted like the VP37 tdi pump ?
some people have tried dismantling without the correct equipment/knowledge and have been left with just a pile of scrap .
I've been building a few of these pumps for different applications - if you can find the age of the pump - some early PSA XUD Peugeot pumps had the same 17mm main spindle as the VW VE pumps :)

Pump came off a '98 model. It has the electronic cold start timing advance mechanism at the bottom/front... that's about as far as my knowledge extends as I've never disassembled one!

I would have just got a pump from a VW 1.6TD or 1.9TD (a lot of 1.9TD '80s in Poland apparently) but they're as rare as rocking horse "pooh" over here.
I've done a bit with the Bosch VE on my 306 (originally replaced the Lucas that biodiesel killed, but also proves very easy to screw a lot of power out of. Now sits on a recently fitted 2.1 XUD11!), so bought another one on ebay hoping to eventually bypass the 16 year old crusty sensors & ECU on my just-run-in (seriously!) Audi 80.

I'm tempted to just chuck it on the engine and see if it runs, keep the VP standard for if/when it doesn't, and then adjust the timing/fuelling (possibly fit a bigger plunger; the only bit inside that I think I can identify!) to improve the way she runs.

What are the chances of the sprocket & woodruff key from the VP fitting the VE and having the correct timing?

What are the chances of the sprocket & woodruff key from the VP fitting the VE and having the correct timing?

all will bolt up as both have 20mm spindle with the woodruff slot in the correct position , Do not change the main plunger 'n' head ( there'll be no great difference in diameter )it needs all other corresponding parts to work correctly , :)

Will it fit on and run first time or will things need adjusting to get any response?

[E D I T] (Had major problems after refitting VP-37 but managed to get it working again)
