Sliding door A reg '84 1.9DG petrol- won't lock with key.

Hi all,
Have checked the wiki and this forum but cannot find this specific fault, so am sorry if this enquiry has been posted previously.

I can close the sliding door and can open it. I can lock it from the manual knob if inside the van. Can unlock it from outside the van with the key (after a few attempts, so not perfect).

The problem is that I cannot lock the sliding door from outside the van with the key anymore.

the handle has always been "sloppy" in its fitting; hangs down etc.
And there was a knack to locking it/unlocking it that I knew to use (twiddle handle; turn key upwards; listen for a "click").
Little one has just gone to the van and is telling me she can't lock it now.
I suspect she's done something kack handed to it and broke something inside.
But because it does lock from the inside makes me wonder if its the barrel and not the lock... (I don't know these things)

Should I take the handle off and inspect? My problem is that I can still lock the van - If I go meddling around with it, I might not be able to...

Sarah,
first off, march out with the wd40 or like. liberally dose key with libricant, insert key. Remove key, spray lock in key opening, and in the side of the door where is shuts. put key in (more lubricant if you want), wiggle key a bit. Operate handle and locking from inside if that is where it works.

keep trying your wiggle technique (good aren't they) see if it works again.

If not....then i'm all out of ideas, sorry.

I gave it a good squirt, but I think its the plastic collar as its "keyed" and I found the "lug" side was opposite to where it should have been - it now locks and unlocks, if one holds the plastic collar where its supposed to be.
I shall follow the threads for the plastic collar replacement (it is very worn down)

Oh, now I have a WD40 stain down my sliding door panel.

Got the grommet from JK - £2.50, ok so some are going to flame me and say they got theirs for £1.38 or similar - but I got free postage with JK, which was a surprise
But I feel it won't fit - my van is Jul '84 - the part says its from Aug '85-Nov '90. Anyone know if this will fit an '84?

Now got to work out how to get handle off van and get this grommet in place (if its the right one).
