Front caliper bolt head size? 1982 van

Post by tobzman »

Hi
Fitting some new discs and pads on my 1982 bus on saturday.
Can anybody tell me what the headsize of the two calipers bolts is in mm please??? I wanna make sure I've got a decent socket in the right size but really don't wanna have to take the wheel off just to measure a bolt head.

Cheers

I think you're right Steve as the bolt is an M14 which would make it 19mm, thought I'd better ask though incase it was some strange kind of bolt.

Try and get the six sided (impact?) version of the socket...sometimes the bolts can be blinking tight....wouldn't want to damage the head.

What have you been fighting your calipers over?

One side is sticking, Both were pretty poor. The front end did not dive when I braked.
Removed the pair and rebuilt them using new seals and dust caps, Van started diving when braking but pulling slightly to the left.
Removed and rebuilt the right side again, as when I removed the pistons (right side only), I forgot to note which side went where. so rebuilt again but still no luck.
One piston just does not glide smoothly. I thought about replaceing only one but think a pair might be better.

Did you use any grease when you renewed your seals? I'm talking about 'Girling' type grease that you would normally put on your pistons before you reassemble the caliper. Done mine last May prior to MOT, I also was having one of the calipers sticking slightly. But all is well now.

I always use brake grease when overhauling my brakes, perhaps that's all you need?

Thanks Tex, I'll give it a go. I only used clean brake fluid.

I'm not sure where you would get it from, try a search for 'Castrol Girling Rubber Red Grease' it's specially formulated for brake cylinders and seals.
