Right got the mirrors apart, painted them, ground down the lugs and managed to put one together, the trouble now is i can't manage to compress the spring enough to get the nut on the tread. Anyone got any tips of how this can be done?

I don't think that'd work.
I need to be able to compress it while it's in place so I can get the nut started. The other one i just leaned my body weight on top of the pliers and managed to start the nut off. Think I might need to eat more pies
