Brushable Seam Sealer - evil snotty sh!t

Post by sjmtlewy »

I've got a tub of grey stripe brushable seam sealer, but am struggling to get a good finish with it - how on earth are you supposed to get this stuff down a seam without spreading it everywhere? Its so sticky, there's no way to sand it afterwards

Not sure its meant for what you're using it for. Would seem (excuse the pun) for bigger jobs like boats, sheds or whatever. Tried an icing bag?

Hrm, it was in the Halfwits body care section. Can you recommend something better for the job?

I'm sure that stuff is used during assembly rather than afterwards as we do with T25s. I forget the name of the stuff folk recommend on here but its applied via a gun and isn't silicon. I run a thin angle grinder disc down my seams first (Dremel probably better) then copious vactan in there. I actually tend to use body filler to be honest, just making a smooth line afterwards to define it. That new aluminium-based isopon filler is damned good - been using it last couple of days. Nice to work with, has aluminium particles in it and has a bit of 'flex' to it. All you're trying to do is keep the water out after all.

I'm looking at doing my seams properly this summer and I think the stuff required/recommended is Tiger Seal. It apparently comes in its own syringe type thing so you can make a nice narrow nozzle. I was told, (but haven't yet checked it out) that most decent auto factor should be able to get it in if not a stock item. Halfwits ain't one of them places!

If you are putting it on in cold temeratures it is hard work. The tin should really be at indoor room temp. about 20 degrees, also try to stir a small amount to make it more plyable.
Mask down either side of the seam, then push it in with the brush or spatula. (those silicone ones the wife has for baking are good for this and also grouting tiles). Use your finger or a cloth dipped in thinners to smooth down the surface. Once smooth allow surface to dry then remove masking and leave it alone to dry.

CycloneMike - Masking tape might help, but I can still imagine it making a horrible mess. Could give it a try.

SynchroSwede - Some sort of mastic gun / injected method sounds ideal, will track some down.

CovKid - Doesnt angle grinding the gap remove the spot welds? Also I'd have thought filler would crack and let water in. The P38 that I use definitely goes very hard, but maybe your new-fangled stuff is better.

I was going to get some Tigerseal myself, you can get it from here; http://classicsagogo.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh00 ... 87#a360987 In fact I got as far as the checkout page but I got put off by the shipping cost of £10 which seemed a bit much for 2 items.

Just Kampers also sell a seam sealer: http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... nels/tools Haven't tried it though.

I used tigerseal on the seams and comes in a cartridge with nozzle just like any silicone sealer.
available in good car parts shops or boat chandlers if you have one nearby.

brushable is just that its more for non visable areas! You can get seam sealer in a tube, much better than tigerseal etc, as its ment as a seam sealer not a mastick!

Tigerseal/Soudaflex/Sikaflex are bonding polyurethane sealants not mastics. :?
By far the best application for the job.

Damien (Rotbox restorations) on here suggested that I used this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUTOSEAL-BODY-SEA ... 439e536f2a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On the lable it says you can apply with a brush, but it is really thick and stcky, you really can't! ... I consulted Damien and he said use it in a gun, put masking tape either side of where the body curves into the seam, then apply straight from the gun (not an excessive amount) into the seam. Then used a rag on your finger, soaked in white spirit, and press fairly firmly into the seam. I did that and your finger creates an even curve all the way down. then remove the masking tape and when dry, sand down where the sealant is the same thickness as the masking tape.

Worked a treat for me :ok

Just got a tube of Tigerseal. Can you use this stuff in a normal mastic gun? The cartridge is metal and doesnt obviously look like the bottom pushes up, how are you supposed to use it?
