combustion blowing past piston rings. drove mine for 20k like this. just keep the oil topped up. or take the engine out and fix it. there might be other causes by blow by is the most obvious.

I am not familiar with the AAZ engine (being a petrol engine type of a bloke !) but I guess it must have a crankcase breather (the same as petrol engines do) and these can get blocked and cause your symptoms.

I know on the Passat / Scirocco engines the breather is built into the rocker cover and they are very prone to getting blocked. I had it on mine. The cure was to take the rocker cover off and inside there is a thin box like enclosure with a gauze type mesh inside it. This gets blockjed with crud and the only way I found to clear it (as you cannot get at the mesh itself) was to heat it up well and truly with a blow torch to dry / burn the oily deposits away and then bang it hard to get the remaining ash and stuff out.

This sorted mine out :)

It is a common(ish) thing with those engines that has led some owners to think their engine was knackered and get a replacement  - I though that until a guy told me the above !! = Wheww

Hope this might help :)

I would have thought so yes, I would expect some blue smoke.

Mine had blue smoke on start up and when under load.... only really noticed under load in the dark when lit up by following vehicles head lights, lump was worse for wear in various ways so i have pulled it out and replaced it. hope yours is just a blocked breather, my breather wasn't blocked as it vented to air via a catch tank and emitted a fair bit of smoke :-(
