prop shaft matters

Post by Ray »

After front suspension overhaul, I intend to tackle prop shaft vibration. I can see visually that the rear uj has play so I am removing it hopefully this week. Its been off before when the VC was changed but the garage did that when the engine was changed. The nuts and bolts were replaced then so hopefully they wont be as rounded as they were last time. Do you have to loosen the front diff as it says in bentley? or will it come off without? It says in bentley to protect the uj's but they are being changed anyway. Also noticed that on the adjacent gearbox mounts there is a gap of a few mm between the lower rubber mount and the lower washer. Is this just the weight its bearing or should be tight? / ? another cause of vibration.

my prop comes on and off no problems. no need to mess with diff or box and i`ve got no vibrations and really my front gearbox mounts could do with changing too.

The gearbox mounts can be tricky. The plastic parts (look a bit like half a mandarin orange) have a 180 degree quadrant on the wide end which interlock with each other (imagine the orange cut through the middle but each half with half a coin stuck to the centre of the orange, when you stick the orange halves back together you have to rotate them until the two halves of the coin align with each other). If the plastic parts are not correctly aligned you end up with a gap 'cos the two 'coin halves' are sitting on each other. Slacken the mounts off and rotate one against the other until they drop into alignment, you'll know when it's right. :D It can be right pain in the bum if you're trying to eradicate a prop vibration, but if you approach it methodically you'll get there in the end. I'm still suffering from the orange fetish in case you haven't noticed.

Thanks for the replies, I noticed on etka5 the odd looking mounts. I will check to see if they are located properly, I know the gearbox was changed just before I got the vehicle!

seen lots where the stack of bushes and nylon plates and washers is all wrong, even with the bolt from the top and nuts on the bottom which you can't do insitu so must have been done before offering up the gearbox and the mounts

Got prop off OK. Took to local prop shop and they say needs two uj's £50 each + fitting £30 each + vat. Thought that a bit steep may well fit myself

Humm, didn't know they had bits in them like that. Wonder if that explains why my transmission rattles slightly more since that dodgy garage lowered the gearbox slightly to do the brake pipes. Bet they've spacked it up. Is it possable to tell without taking them apart? I had a look at them when I first herd the rattle but didn't see anything obveous like looseness.
