Broken Return spring

Post by jester1467 »

Had a bit of an incident on Sunday, fortunately only 100 metres from getting home.
Put me foot down on the accelerator to pull away and wwwrrrRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
The accelerator drops to the floor only way I can stop it is pull it up with me left foot :(
Oh no the accelerator cable has snapped, well so I thought anyway, got the van home to check it out to find the long return spring on the injector swivelly thing had snapped.
Thought thats a result :D I dont have to feed a new cable under the van and go through all that hassle just replace the spring :ok

I have searched all over the net and purchased some universal springs, useless. I've checked out VW - stopped making them in 2007. All the local suppliers dont have anything vaguely resembling my requirements, ive checked out brake drum spings cos theyre the same length, too hard, others are too soft

Where can I get these springs, or wot is usual remedy in this situation?

Dont really want to go to Germany with a bodge I cant rely on 100%!!!

The throttle return springs that Merlin Motorsport do are the same as the ones I picked up off the internet.

They are very soft and dont have the required pull back on the accelerator pedal.

Need to find a spring with the same reach and return otherwise the accelerator will just go "floppy" over time.

Might need to source a spring manufacturer?

Or am I just making things more complicated than they are?

long return spring on the injector swivelly thing had snapped.

er petrol or diesel ?

surely on a petrol the throttle body spring does the work and the long thin spring is just a damper

I have a spare but it's at the lockup and I don't know when I'll be there again

have you tried vw.classicparts.de that's where all our bits went when the shelves were cleared

Petrol

I was under the impression that the spring wrapped around the throttle valve was the damper spring and the long spring off the throttle valve arm was the return spring

Thats how it appears to work on mine anyhow

I have boxes of vw springs from a job lot of parts I got from Oz. If you post a picture and provide me with some dimensions I'll have a dig for you.
Cheers

the long spring is the damper, and the one that is wraped around the body is the throtle return spring, went through all this when we had the cold snap and my throtle peddle froze solid along with my gear linkage. turned out to be all sorts of crap in the in the cable and in the gear linkage.

Now have another dilema then, managed to get a replacement for the spring that broke, got the last one that Syncrospares had...........Unicorn stuff apparently..........lots rarer than Rocking Horse

Accelerator now works ok, but if what your saying is right, then the damper spring ( 145mm long in total with a spring body that is 60mm long and 10mm diameter ) is this now acting as as the return, and I need to look at the one wrapped around the injector valve :?:

The brake light switch activation spring on a late series 1 Land-Rover looks pritty simular to what you show above (5 1/2in in length aparently, quite small dia and with a long leg on one end), so if the spring rate is apropreate it might make a decent substitute.

Part number 243225, £5.25+vat from Dunsfold aparently (being an S1 part most LR parts surplyers probubly won't do them, and of the few that do Dunsfold is probubly the only one I'd buy from as its probubly not made of chinas finest spring steel with solely plastic behavour.
