Suspect turbo on my 1.9Td AAZ camper

Post by brookie »

Is there any way of 100% diagnosing a suspect turbo? Having just got back from France I notice I'm struggling up hills and even changing down whereas before 5th would have just pulled me up.
If my turbo is dead what turbo should I be fitting to my 1.9Td AAZ engine?
VW specify p/n 028 145701 RX (£612!!) yet the data plate on my one says
068 145701 OX and amongst other data it also says;
5314 980 6000 and 17029 0092 KKK

Originally the engine was a 1.6Td JX engine and has been fitted with this AAX type. Is there a chance the turbo I have is originally from the JX? If this is the case are the turbos interchangeable between the 2 types of engines?
Would really appreciate some advice/help - VW were like 'computer says nahhhh!'

Cheers, Brookie. :?: :)

Of course 'computer says no' - it didn't leave the factory like it.

Get a picture of what you've got up here. There's a strong chance that you've got a JX turbo fitted.

both engines had the kkk k14 or the garrat T2 turbo, the main difference between the two is the orientation of the exhaust and inlet port and the oil feed and return as on the Jx the turbo is mounted on the front underside of the exhaust manifold and on the aaz middle and top and the boost is probably a liitle higher so depending which set up you have is probably the turbo though the original AAZ one could have been rejigged to fit onto the jx manifold this site may help diagnosing fault http://www.turboclinic.co.uk/info.html and i think you'll find the prices here a bit more reasonable here http://www.turboactive.com/sess/utn;jse ... shopscript

068 is a 1.6TD part number, 028 is AAZ/TDI part number.
You have a JX turbo fitted, and can be replaced with another JX turbo, however, to be right it wants a AAZ turbo swapped around to suit the JX manifold.

Suspect turbo on my AAZ engine

Post by brookie »

Thanks for all the gen guys in particular those web links.
So basically,a JX turbo is exactly same as an AAZ turbo just with different positions for hose and pipe ports. It looks like I have a JX fitted according to those part numbers so if I have to replace it I take it that getting another JX turbo is ok with no decrease in performance?
I still wish there was a straight forward go/no-go test to tell if the turbo was kaput. The engine's only done 9K and starts/runs smooth and sweetly so I think that's ruled out. Oil's changed every 3K and air filter is only 8K old. After reading the web link for diagnosis I did gulp when I saw the note about priming the turbo as I did remove the thing when replacing the exhaust manifold gasket and I DIDN'T prime it. Could one case of not priming a turbo really kill one off?
What should a high-top happily cruise at in 5th anyway!?
Our one does 67ish then smells a hill and revs start to die.
Appreciate anymore info/tales!

you could take the inlet pipe off and have a poke around, if there's a lot oil then the oil seals are probaly very warn, does the turbine turn easily or has it seized / feel rough - bearings and does it wobble about its axis sign of wear or if you know a good diesel speacialist near you go to them they should have all the kit to test and tweek, my hitop will sit a 70 to 80 on the flat but on steep hills usually end up in 4th doing about 50 ish.
