Intermittent Temp Guage

Hi there,

I have just bought a T25 and the guage sometimes goes off the scale and the light flashes. Almost as quickly as it goes up, it can drop again as well.

I have checked the coolant level and all is ok there.

I would imagine from the speed at which the temp goes up and down that there is a fualt somewhere rather than the van is actually overheating.

I have noticed the battery terminals are loose and probably need replacing - could this be the cause or any other suggestions please?

if the van starts I reckon the terminals are good enough, other earthing problems crowns behind fuse box, below the coil and the engine block.

The gauge will rise to a high reading and LED starts to flash if:-

1. Coolant Temp is too high as a result of low coolant, faulty thermostat, igintion Timing retarded, Engine working too hard, blocked rad, (the usual and most common causes/suspects), etc

2. The temperature sender wiring from the gauge or the sender connection is faulty and causing a short circuit or very low resistance across the temp gauge.

3. The coolant Level Module 43 has an intermittent fault ( however, if this goes faulty it is usually permanently faulty and the guage needle swings over to the right even with the engine cold (but there is sods law).




I would check 1 above thoroughly, and then 2. Lots of info in the wiki on this subject......

Thanks for all the advice. After the new engine was fitted, it still read 3/4 temp.

So on the advice of the forums here, I bought a temp sender from Brick Werks, and now sat a fraction over half :ok

I think the moral of the story when the temp gauge appears to be reading high although everything else seems in order is to get a temp sender from Brick Werks and try that - seems to be more accurate possibly than other sender units on the market
