actuator pin !! i cant find it

Post by robobobo »

My starter finally died last week and i am trying to replace it.

I have removed the drive shaft and also the 7mm screws holding the vacuum switch but am having trouble finding the roll pin. I have pulled the switch off as far as it will go and loosened the rubber hose protecting the shaft.

I have looked on the wiki images that show where it should be so have a good clue what to look for and have looked at all the previous posts i can find..
Before i tackle it again tomo though can anyone tell me if and how i push this rod in so the pin is near the base(gearbox). I have a syringe but which hole do i blow it in. Or should the pin always be in the same place, i dont know if the silver rod i can see nearest the gearbox is a moving part or whether the moving part is obscured by the rubber boot.

Part of the problem is that the rubber boot is obscuring most of the shaft, this is about 50mm long with a metal ring round the centre about 15mm wide. Do i need to split this at he metal ring to find the pin?

Im sure it will become obvious in the cold light of day but a bit of advice would be great incase im missing something. Gotta get this van mobile tomo, dont fancy another week of bump starts and bicycles.

Thanks in advance :ok .
I would be so much harder for me to work on this van as a newbie to syncro mechanics if it wasn't for the help and knowledge of the people on this forum
cheers

At a stab, starter gone, "idiot" of a job to change, drop actuator, drive shaft etc etc, its a petrol :rofl I feel your pain as i have done it a few times  The tank is set in a different place than a 2wd van, no actuator on a 2wd van, actually its a totally different ball game, shall we lave it at that?

There is a cir-clip that keeps it in place, maybe it has pinged off....

Well i thought so, i changed the starter on my 1.9 petrol and never removed the driveshafts so i was trying to ensure that the guy wasn't removing more than he should be for better access which is why i asked for clarification of engine type, and what do i get for my trouble ? some smart 4r5e mocking me for trying to help.

Sharn't bother in future :( :x

2.1 petrol yea and the starter is scuppered. Still not clear about whether the shaft needs moving in so i can see the pin or indeed if this part of the shaft moves atall. In the image i saw on wiki the pin was located nearest to the gearbox.
The rest of the shaft is obscured by the rubber boot. It was late when i got to that part so maybe i missed it but im pretty posative i could not see the pin on the 8-12 mm of shaft that i could see before the boot.

Thanks, hope youv'e all made up :D :rofl

Sure why not, while your here i just drove for 40 minutes back to the fella you bought that part from you were after that I 80-90 expressed from south London a 300km trip for you that you didnt turn up for... I have relayed it back another 300k back to the bloke you bought it from so you can then get the £5 part posted to you.

Get the actuator off with the two long 7mm bolts,

take the bracket off then you will see wether the clip is sat in the groove on the pin. Sorry your thread has gone abit wired its not usually like this.

You need to slide the rubber backwards and forwards to see if you can get a better view.. you might have to slice the rubber and remove that to get at it.. its a bit of a bugger to get starter out as Jed says.. the rubber "boot" isnt anyting special, just small length of coolant hose, there is a plastic joiner part there too so try not to cut that..

You may also find it a bit easier if you can drop the engine end a bit to, undo the engine mount bar up at the chassis ends.. support it well and only drop it a bit.. enough to get better clearance around the starter. NO DONT do this.. my brain is fuddled..

IIRC (box has been in and out several times but not for a good while..) if the circlip is on then the sleeve in the box is held in place.. if it isnt, you need to push it back whilst sucking the actuator rod out...

I Think Aidan is away at the mo so our resident expert isnt available.. but there are some others that should be able to advise.. Coz my memory isnt what it used to be.. :rofl

Dont drop the frellin engine

1 take the 6 drive shaft bolts out and drop the rear drive shaft.
2 take the actuator off
3 take the airbox off and the hoses to it to allow access to the engine/gearbox bolt.
4 Undo the top bolt engine/gearbox bolt.
5 undo the lower starter bolt
6 wiggle it down and disconnect the wires.
7 get the new starter connected/wires
8 go from 8-1 again
