Recently had starting problems on my van (1.9 petrol) that a mechanic friend of a friend tracked down to the lead(s) between coil, ingition amplifier and distributor. I think it's called the king lead. After replacing this, the van started fine. He told me that the coil was looking a bit burnt out and it might be worthwhile replacing it and replacing the ignition amplifier.
I can understand that a coil can burn out but I know nothing of the workings in the amplifier, so my question is, do they wear out / burn out / fail ? and are they easy to obtain. I just phoned GSF and they have the coil on the shelf but didn't seem to know what the amplifier was, let alone stock it. If I do need the amplifier, where would be a good place to buy this?

What engine?
I would run it a bit first.. if its running fine, leave alone.. ign amps are same as fitted to lots of other VW/Audi vehicles.. they generally either work or not...
Coil, worth doing a resistance check on it, if its within the specs then dont bother wasting you money..
Leads.. you need good quality leads as supplied by Brickwerks, GSF ones can be cheapo quality..

It's a 1.9 DG. Thanks for the advice. I will get the coil checked and leave the amp alone. GSF are offering two coils, a Bosch at £34.90 or an aftermarket job at £20.90, do you think it's worth paying the extra if I need a replacement?
