temperature gauge

Post by tone »

Temperature gauge not working properly - been living with it for a while but still annoying. Pretty sure van is heating up all right as there's plenty of warmth coming from the heater but the gauge hardly moves - does move fractionally just enough so you can see it coming into view but that's it. Don't suppose its hurting anything but would like to get it fixed if possible. Can anyone help with advice please?

Thanks

Tony

short the sender and see if it rises, maybe a bad earth maybe a failing sender maybe a faulty gauge.

worse case scenario would be that the termostat is stuck open, does the rad fan ever cut in a few minutes after a long journey if you leave the camper idling?

silly question I know but where is the radiator ( presumably the "sender" is attached to it ) . How do you access the radiator? Now stop laughing because I don't know where the radiator is!! Presumably where you would normally find one ie in the front despite engine being in the back!
Can't say I've ever heard the fan cut in in the 3 years I've had the van !

As you can guess anything to do with mechanics is not my forte !

PS I do know where the wheels are - one on each cornern I believe!

i find it easier to get under the van to reach the sender. the temp one faces the front of the van. has a circlip holding the plug on and another holding the sender onto the thermostat housing. prise off the plug one only. short the connections on the plug and get someone to check the gauge needle moves right up. should tell you if the sender is guffed or not.

no don't apologise .. I was referring to tone , not telling us what van he has.. petrol, diesel, early or late.
as it matters where he has to look for the sender

I changed my sender on my 1.6 TD at the weekend as my gauge was doing the same shy trick.
Works perfectly now, showing just under half temperature.
My sender was on the rear of the head, screwed into the heater pipe housing thingy

My 1.6 TD doing the same. Can you change thermostat and sender without draining the system? As I suspect mine is the thermostat.
