smokey engine when cold

Post by lloydy »

Hi everyone, noticing when starting van from cold [1.9 petrol] it smokes for a couple of minutes. its a greyish colour smoke. If van is parked up next to a wall it leaves a black splattering on the wall, inside of exhaust pipe is quite sooty. After a minute or two smoke disapears. The smoke isn't particulary bad, noticed the splattering on the wall first.
Its had a recon engine fairly recently. the engine seems to run fine, no probs starting ect.
Bit of a newbie with these vans, is this normal? Or should i mention this when i have my gasure conversion next month?
Many thanks Lloyd

mine does the same, when we had the snow it made the snow black,it runs great and the emissions were fine when it had the mot,is it just the choke being a bit rich when starting up?

Indeed...perhaps we have become very complacent with how effortless newer vehicles engines start and run from cold..seamlously going from cold start to running temperature without a hickup. Engine technologies especially the electronic (ECU) that control fuel and timing, have come on leaps and bounds in the intervening two decades since the T3 was introduced. From old mechanical bi-metalic stepped choke systems to a point that..you can't even tell that the engine is on choke!

Bit like that? Note its on choke then as I rev it, choke comes off and smoke stops. On cold days its much more pronounced as the choke is on more.

Yeah pretty much the same, does stop when you rev the engine.
Is that just something they do? or can choke be adjusted?
Great to see a video of it, thanks

Tis possible your choke may be on longer than it needs to be but I wouldn't worry as long as it comes off completely after a few minutes. Alternative is to fit a manual choke but then you have to remember to turn it off - not a great solution.
