I'd be surprised if the pickup was anything other than pure VW. Its taken them long enough to get it to market. Badge engineering another vehicle is a quick way to get a new model. The Taro in its day got VW into some new markets for little effort, but being as VW and Toyota are now arch rivals for the worlds biggest manufacturer I doubt they still help each other. As the VW brand is even more global now they don't need the help.
If it does share some engineering with another brand its probubly a brand that VW already surplies a lot of [TDI?] engines to so thats what VW gets in return.
