My new Doka and a few questions on her

Post by georgeIRL »

I bought this at the start of the year without seeing it, i was too busy to fly over to look at it so it was a gamble, thankfully its not a bucket of "pooh" but there is one or two extra things on it that i didn't see in the photos and the seller didn't tell me about but nothing major.

Its a 87 Doka, running a 1.9 DG engine (for now), lowered 70mm.

Over the weekend i started going through the doka and planing what's needed, what work needs to be done and what i need to buy for it.

Firstly is the metal work:
I need a rear wheel arch for the passenger side. These look the same as a standard T3 so am i right in thinking the repair panel from Schofileds will do the trick, its only the arch i need, not the panel above it which i know is different.
I also need the drivers side lower panel for the rear compartment. Not sure whats its called, its where the door would be on a LHD. This also looks the same as the normal T3 one but shorter, again I'm thinking the Schofeilds panel and cut to size.

Am i right my thinking above or is there a place that does Doka panels.

Window rubbers:
Mine arn't bad but if there are easily available i wouldn't mind replacing the rear 3 windows rubber seals, I'll be taking the glass out anyways for the respray. Can these still be got or do i need to try save the ones I have in.

Rear seat belts.
There are no seat belts in the rear, it looks like there are hanger for the two side ones. What belts fit these, standard front seat belts or caravelle belts.

I would also like to put a 3 point belt in the middle, ( I have 2 kids and would like to but them in the inner 2 seats). Has anyone done this to give pointers. I'm thinking the rear panel isn't strong enough to support the belt without strenghtening or would i be better running something independent. Backup plan is roll bar material between the C pillars.

Engine:
The automatic choke doesn't seem to be working, she is a pig to start but once warmed up she is running great. Its a 1.9DG, is there any common problems to look for or do i just start stripping and see what i find.

I think thats it for now, once i start stripping her I'm sure I'll find more problems!

Thanks

George

I'm not a doka expert but yes you're right on the two/three panels you mention. Have owned one in the past - it was also a double crew cab like yours.

As for choke, check you actually have power to it.

The saddest thing was that my double crew had to go to scrap man as I was divorcing and simply had no way to keep it. This was way before the T25 finally became accepted by the VW fold. It had a big bore beetle lump in it (they fit nicely in the engine bay without too much modification other than fabricated engine surround tinware, engine mount and throttle cable). Was a great move as it was cheap to repair and parts freely available. Still miss it.

Try re posting in the Syncro section. Those Syncro boys know their Dokas. :ok
Martin.

Diesel is an engine not a fuel.

I liked camping so much I went full time.
