well a better description than "sounds crap" might help

No power ...have you put the leads on right and it's timed correctly?

as for the buzzer.. is the oil pressure sensor working/connected?

laid up waterboxers are very tappy till you prime the tappets with a good long run.

Again ..is it timed right?

Oil light and buzzer comes on, so has it got any oil pressure or is that why its rattling? Sounds like you got yourselves a lemon

Added to Ian's quote above...

Unscrew the oil pressure switch a bit too with the engine running - if you have oil pressure then you'll get oil coming up out of this - it's worth also checking the CORRECT oil filter is used as they have valves in them - if it valves out the wrong way then you get no oil movement!

Lastly who ever did the head... did they set the tappets with the right preload? many Aircooled mechanics and many normal (non-older VW) mechanics will put a gap on the tappets... these vans have hydraulic tappets and need preloading - if they have not been preloaded and the engine has been run then there is a strong chance the pushrod has jumped up out of it's seat on the tappet and has wedged on the tappet rim and holds the valve/s partially opened - if this is the case then you need to undo the rocker assembly, re-seat the pushrod and re-preload the tappet

It is by will alone that I set my 'van' in motion!
