Exhaust support

Post by sjmtlewy »

My 1.9dg has an exhaust system that looks pretty much identical to this:

My question is: I can't see anything supporting the system other than the four points where the pipes run to the engine. Is this normal? or am I missing some kind of support / bracket / strap / the obvious?

The early type exhausts (up to mid 1985) on the 1.9DG rely solely on the 8 bolts/studs into the cylinder heads for support. The later exhaust has an additional support bracket to help take the weight. The original VW back box on the early system is very heavy.

When I fitted this (see bottom of page), I added a bungee to the bracket on the stainless bike box for good measure as I too felt the lack of support wasn't great. You could fit additional supports to the standard box but they'd need flexibilty to allow engine to move as power goes on and off or at least bolt any supporting bracket direct to engine block. All the standard bug exhausts are also free-floating affairs ofcourse, but much lighter.
