starter motor snag

1.9 dg petrol, starter motor suddenly died a couple of weeks ago. Removed it earlier to get it reconned to find the end of the armature missing, found it held in the bush with about 1mm proud, anybody got any bright ideas how to extract it without dropping the gearbox and if i do manage to extract it but it falls down past the starter ring is it likely to do untold damage? R

If it's not seized in there, it should come out with a magnet on a stick. otherwise drill and tap it so you can screw a bolt in and pull it out. pack the area with rags so it does'nt drop into the bell housing.
