Alternator died, what to do?

Post by lloyd »

Need some help.

Started off for work and light came on. Slipped back home and engine died as I parked. Checked voltage.. definately not charging. Not sure where's best to get another as I need it quick. GSF and Euro Car Parts are closest .. well Halfords too.
Wondering which one is best.. Looked online GSF and several alternators listed for 1.9 from 54 + core & vat = 8 quid for 65amp to 96.50 for 90amp + core & vat.. Assume cheapest is flash and dash rebuild and probalby won't last long. Have 65amp now... which one is best value to get??

Or should I get rebuild kit??.. and where to get kit??

Thanks
Lloyd

most of the time its just the regulator.
some bosch units have a regulator which is held in place via 2 flat blade small bolts
5 minutes to remove it.
you dont need to dissasemble the alternator, it is just on the rear.

you can buy new or i will look see if i can sort a 2nd hand one it you have this type of alternator.

most places , reconditioners ect will only replace this part , clean and paint the unit then supply it as a recon unit!

have borrowed this link, look at the pic the bit with the black circle is the regulator

Altenator out now.

Thanks Billy for info. Have the regulator/brush holder out now. Brushes are plenty long, but contact on regulator to spring tab in housing are corroded kinda bad.Is this a normal kind of problem?... or am I only hoping for an easy out.

it is possibly the prob , but commonly its internal of the regulator.

easy just to fit another
9/10 times this is the fault.

ask you local supplier , usually then can supply the regulator only , they used to be about £10
but if you cant get one and can wait a day i can get a 2nd hand one off to you?

Cleaned the contact tab inside from reg/brush pack to in alt. housing, put it back together and Bob's your uncle! Plan to get another and bearing for complete rebuild, but at least it working!

Are all 65amp alternators for our late model vans (1988 1.9 wbx) using same bearings? Can't read Bosch number but VW number is 025903023B

Thanks everyone for all the help! :ok
