Pop-Top Mattress

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the place to post, but just a little recommendation for mattresses in my Devon Moonraker Pop-Top.

I've had some serious problems with mattress dampness and one morning awoke to find a layer of mould on the pop-top mattress

I might be stating the obvious but I decided to take the pop-top mattress out and leave it out. Instead, I've bought myself an Exped Self Inflating mattress from the outdoor shop : http://www.exped.com/exped/web/exped_ho ... enframeset (Sleeping Mats - Slim Light)

It's quite thin (3.8cm) but insulating and pretty snug - I'm 80kg so it's fine for my weight. Anyway, so I leave it rolled up in the back of the van and just put it out for sleeping.

Anyone else had probelms with mouldy and damp mattresses? Anyone tried using these sorts of mattresses? I've tested it out but have yet to spend a full night on it, but it seems pretty good!

Until recently I was using a Coleman inflatable double matress. Very good for space saving and quite comfy to sleep on by yourself. However add a second person (let alone 2 dogs) and they're not so good. Too much rolling together and bouncing around (and not in the good way).

Hehe. Yeah, I tried a higher and fuller mattress at the shop, but found it was like a balancing act staying on it. With a couple of dogs that would be a nightmare!
Going to test mine out for the night at the weekend and report back - just in case someone's interested in getting one

I use one of these in the top bed in the camper. When I had the bed extended (was only 4ft long when I bought the van), the plan was to get a proper mattress. But I thought that the money and the space used wasn't really worth it. The top bed in my van is only used once in a blue moon. I already had some of these airbeds from camping. I used it for a 3 night trip to France earlier in the year and it was fine. I find it comfy and wouldn't contemplate getting a proper mattress now.

Although it sounds uncomfortable, an inflatable matress should only be pumped up to the point where you can just feel the ground or base below it with your bum......any more & you will just roll around & end up half on & half off of the thing!

Again ok if you're on your own. However if we don't fully inflate ours then carrying substantially more meat than my other half means that my ass is permenantly on the deck and her nose permenantly on the ceiling.

Extremely comfortable if you're on your own though.

Exped mattress has now been tested only on top of rock 'n roll bed, but kept me well insulated and was comfy too
Bit long though and tends to slide towards the front of the van - could have been because I was parked on a slight slope

hehe, not entirely conclusive, but it did feel comfy!
