2.1iDJ Not Starting

Post by shane r »

OK, it's been acting a bit weird for a few outings. Starts perfectly strong on the button. Leave to idle, runs for a few mins warming up and then quits. Get it going again and on the move quits every couple of mins requiring a restart. Yesterday when this happened on the way to work I pulled over looked in engine bay and checked all hoses and electrical connections-making sure everything fine. Got in and drove perfectly for 30 miles to work. Came out after work, drove home without any probs in stop and go commuter traffic.

This morning same old story. Fires up perfectly then quit on idle. Then wouldn't start. Starter perfect.

Where to begin?

Thanks in advance, Shane

Can't help specifically but have you looked in the 'Wiki' as there's some typical problems discussed in there?

I would give everything a once over, clean the spark plugs, look at the distributor may be change it and the rotor ( easy to do). If the HT leads look crap then change them you can set a good set from gsf 20 squid.

I would also look at the airflow meter/ box thing, give it a clean spray the connector with wd 40, make sure there all the air pipes have a good seal, any gaps / air leaks causes 'hunting'. Also the idle stablisation valve, give that a soak in petrol for a few hours. Have a good dig around check for loose wires, bad earth points.

Also check the fuel lines and maybe replace or clean the fuel filter, and run some feul injector cleaner through it.

I don't know too much about these engine yet ( i have just bought one ! ) but thats what I would do.

Coudl also be a faulty ignition module/ ecu but start with the basics first. I had a similar problme where I serviced the van and it started and then cut out, I realised I have left the connection off the airflow box make sure you check that too.

Someone will be along in a min to tell you exactly what it is.

Best of luck

Thanks Nindy

The HT leads are less than a year old as are the plugs. I'll have a look over the things you mention. This dizzy did burn up a rotor arm about a year ago, so I suppose I should look there. For some reason I was thinking it might be related to coil but now seems unlikely.

Hi,

I had a problem with my DJ not starting a few months back, no spark whatsoever.

Turned out to be the ignition amplifier, lots of stuf on here about them apprently they normally play up for a bit first then just stop working all together. I checked all sorts before I found it, basically take out a plug and check for a spark, if none then I suggest you replace the ignition amp. Cost me £10 for a secondhand one, when fitted van started 1st time!

Best of luck,

I just had a new exhaust fitted but when they had finished they couldn't get it to run.

I found that it would start ok and idle a bit lumpy but then cut and any attempt to rev it made it cut sooner.

Turns out it was the 'nose' of the coil which had broken so that the lead did not stay on the contact inside properly. A good wiggle got it to stay on and run but I changed the coil anyway and now it runs smoother than ever before. Maybe the coil was slowly breaking down anyway?

Good luck. :ok
