Vanagon 2.0 fuel injected hot starting problems.

Post by ian&jan »

Hi Ghys/Gals,
recently bought a 1982 american import vanagon (Petrol, not Californian). She's in good nick, but has a slightly annoying problem: After a hundred or so miles of perfect running, she will not tick-over without dying and once she has, she wont start without a 20 minute rest. I've checked all the resources on the site and can't find much on the fuel injection models. Bit of a problem with the timing, the Haynes manual says there is a degree register behind the pulley wheel: There ain't on mine! any ideas?? The timing marks on the engine appear to be offset from the crankcase split according to the manual, which leaves me little to go on! So Iv'e gone through the rest of the obvious (Plugs, dizzy, leads, etc) without a great deal of sucess. The problem being : I'm not sure if this is a fuel /vacuum problem, or some sort of ignition problem. If anyone has an idea, it would be great to hear it! I live with 'Molly' whilst I working away from home (5 days a week) and Bristol traffic is becoming such a pain!

On the bright side, I own a campsite near the showground in Wadebridge (Cornwall) which could accommodate about 30 vans.....anyone interested??

Ian.

Ian, I guess your best bet would be to get hold of a Bentley workshop manual, it will help you no end as these manuals were specific to American spec Transporters/Vanagons.
And they do have very good sections on how to test wiring circuits and what to check in similar circumstances.

I assume yours is an Aircooled Fi motor unlike the ones we had to put up with which were fitted with carburettors.........

Ignition timing scales are still available in the UK ....

PS, your offer of a campsite may make you a very popular chap, be warned. :ok

Hi Fritz,
Thanks for the info, the Vanagon Haynes manual isn't very helpful! I think it may be something to do with the EGR which has similar symptoms. Driving in the Bristol rush-hour is proving quite exciting in a 'it's a 26 year old! cut me some slack' kinda way, when I stop someone getting home 30 seconds earlier! :D
Cheers,

Ian

fritz means the bently manual for the t25 / vanagon / t3 not the haynes one it only deals with brit stuff.

the bently one is a us one so ideal for you. :ok

Thanks for the replies, it seems the Bently manual is the way to go. Its not the EGR as it turns out, I spent ages tring to identify it from the vague Haynes pictures only to discover it had been removed and plugged! Ah well back to the drawing board!
