Glow plug circuit
Evening all,
Is there a glow plug (timer) relay in the old style fuse box - i have the relay in the engine bay - and can hear something clicking in the glove box when turning on the ignition - also can anyone point me in the direction of a fuse box diagram,

The timer relay is in the black plastic box on the left side of the bulkhead in front of the engine. If it's playing up it's worth taking it out, popping off the cover and looking at the little printed circuit board inside. Mine had a broken track on the board, so I soldered a wire across the break and it's been fine ever since.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

I have replaced that relay - the problems is the van will start all the time from cold - but after driving for 10/15 mins and turning the engine off - on my return 5/10 mins later the glow plug light will not come on - the engine will not start at all - if i leave it for 20/30 mins the glow plug light comes on the dash and the van will start .

I wouldn't expect the glow plug light to come on after running for 15 mins, as the engine will be warm, and the sensor will not let the glowplugs work. That seems to be working OK. My 1.6D needs the cold start advance pulled out to start even when warm (but not when hot), which seems to me to indicate that it needs a fair bit of advance to start except when thoroughly hot. Is your cold start advance lever working OK? Is your timing OK?

The clicking in the glove box was the wiper relay, i traced the starting problem to a bad connection on the fuel solenoid, took off cleaned and now its starts when warm, thanks for the help,

Oh the joy! Someone with the same problem. What a nightmare having to wait at fuel station for van to decide it needs glow plugs! Next issue - how to sort it. Just been thro my van manual and can't work it out. What and where is the fuel solenoid or could it be the temperature sender unit whatever that is? Thanks in anticipation

Fuel solenoid is the cylindrical thing about the size of a cotton reel on the back of the diesel injection pump on top of the engine. It should have one black wire going to it. It shuts off the fuel supply to the injection pump when you turn the ignition off.

My van won't start without the glow plugs even when warm (1.9 AEF)so it is fitted with a small resistor, between the engine temp sensor and the glow plug relay, which tell the relay the engine is not quite up to temp and puts the glow plugs on for 10 seconds when the engine is hot.

It has fixed it. I tried to remove the resistor and just use the engine temp sensor but the glow plug light didn't come on when the engine was warm so the van wouldn't start.
Not exactly sure what size the resistor is but is has the following coloured rings on red/black/black/red/red.
You can get a 0-4.7K ohm variable resistor with knob from Maplins as in this thread on BY

20k ohm or 220 ohm ( depending if the multiplier was read correctly - bliddy hard on some resistors)

Can't guarantee it. some of the reds could have been brown.
Resistance would fall in the 0-4.7K ohm range though

No - problem not yet sorted. Did have a quick look and fiddled about with wiring (no idea what I was doing) and promptly broke down the following day as inadvertently loosened poor connection to fuel solenoid. Easily fixed as knew what I was looking for by then but still not starting when been running for a while. All the wiring looks really dodgy going to black box so need to replace but don't know where to start??? Wires all different colours - do I just need to buy short lengths of each? Can't see anything on Just Kampers - will any motor parts shop do? Don't want to start buying new relays or solenoids til wiring sorted but quite fancy the idea of disconnecting engine temperature sender as assume that engine will then think its always cold and glow plugs will be activated? Are there any obvious problems with doing this? Many thanks for all responses - can't wait for better weather as fingers get cold!!!!
