tappet adjustment, clarification please

Post by spike blonde »

ok so refitted left side cylinder head yesterday n everything looking ok so far.
followed haynes instructions for tappet resetting, theres just one thing on it im hoping someone will clear up so i can go ahead and refill engine with oil.
haynes says "back off adjusting screw till clear of valve stems, then screw back in till they make light contact, from this position tighten the screws two further turns, tighten lock nuts without allowing them to move"

all seems straight forward i know, the thing that is troubling me is, what does a "turn" of the screw constitute?
my logic says a turn is a 360 rotation while a few people ive spoke to think its as far as you can turn the screwdriver without moving your hand back to top position (ie 180 degree rotation), to me thats half a turn but its confused me enough to worry that ive overadjusted the tappets.
can anyone clarify this for me so i can finish putting engine back together
thanks, spike :)

'a turn' is a 360 degree rotation.

You don't say what engine you have ? IIRC for the WBX (1.9DG and 2.1 DJ/MV & SS) the VW recommended setting is 1.5 turns not 2 as Uncle Haynes say's ... it was altered by VW after Haynes carved the tablet of stone.

General forum consensus is 2 full turns is too much, VW say one and a half full turns but I have seen a few people that say even that is too much.

Reminds me of an experience as a lad (long ago!)
I was helping a mechanic tune up an engine in the village garage, he used to use the clock as the screw guide.
My first time tweeking this carb he shouts out "get the screwdriver and give the mixture another 10 minutes, I've give it two hours now"

so I stood by the car for ten minutes
how they all laughed :D
