I suspect my water pump bearing is making a noise.
to eliminate it I presume it's ok to remove the belt and run the engine for a few seconds?

Re: Bearing noise
Get a long screw driver and put it on the pump housing when running put your ear on the other end, you will soon know if its the pump....BE VERY VERY CAREFULL

Mmm what's that strange smell from my exhaust...

HANDLE END towards your ear. This is essential.fullsunian wrote:Get a long screw driver and put it on the pump housing when running put your ear on the other end, you will soon know if its the pump....BE VERY VERY CAREFULL
Any long metal bar will do, 1/2 drive socket extension etc.

Re: Bearing noise
As they said.......would just add that noise does travel and so this method isn't fool proof. Something close to the water pump (a failing alternator for instance) can make a similar noise which...because of it's close proximity, could appear to be the water pump. All I can say is..if in doubt, slip the belt and manually turn, it should be pretty obvious which one it is.

Re: Bearing noise
mine was gone, I scarily removed the belt and the pully wobbled all over the place even 120 miles from home you can tell when something should be smooth and feel like it is falling apart inside.
Replaced and now leaks from the lower pipe and "multi use" plug.
