Grindy gearbox
After having my van for 3 years, and thinking I have been fairly thorough with servicing I have always managed to ignore the part on the MOT where it says "noisy gearbox"! I also assumed that the grinding noise Ive been hearing all this time was just the noise these old buses make. (ignorance is a wonderful thing!) My brother in Law is a mechanic and we gave him a lift where he brought to my attention that the majority of the noise is coming from the gearbox and not the engine!
Its been like this since Ive had it and managed trips all over England and Wales as well as a couple weeks in Spain and a week in Ireland! Now its been highlighted to me Im worried sick. I am at a bit of a loss of as what to do next really. Guessing a gearbox oil change is a bit late! All advice gratefuly received. By the way it is a 1.9 watercooled 4 speed, if that makes any odds and there is not much hassle in getting in gear and stuff.

1987 autohomes kamper 1.9 pop top, (as requested by the head honcho!)

Re: Grindy gearbox
drop the oil and see what the plug is like , size of your middle finger and it really wants a rebuild, and how much oil you have, could be reason for noise, then put 4 litres of nice fresh oil and see what it's like, keep an eye out for a good low miles used box in the meantime
