High Top roof sealant

Post by ncook »

I have an 86 Leisuredrive High Top , and the sealant on the rear of the roof has come off. So there is a 1cm gap between the high-top and the original van roof. What can I use to seal this back up? I think I'll also have to put some kind of weight on top while it sets, because the top comes away from the roof in the middle.

Any advice from anyone who's had to do this would be much appreciated,

thanks,

Neil

I think high roofs are usually bonded on with 2k adhesive. VW adhesive part number D 001500. See this link for details you will need to register it free http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2SY/1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 56/599259/

You could try ratchet straps to pull the roof down, put them round the van and tighten like a belt, not done this myself but would think you will get a more constant pressure than weighting the roof or sitting on it till the adhesive sets.

You will probably need to clean the bonding surfaces with some thing like acetone or meths, to ensure good adhesion.

Thanks all, I'll see what I can find out of the above. Rachet straps are a good idea.

Looking round the roof, i see the sealant isn't in a great state in the side roof sills either, but I'll see how it goes with the rear first.

Hi
Ratchet straps are a good idea but use heavy duty ones, not lightweight borrowing some is best .
There is a company that fits hightops that are mebers of this site, perhaps they could advise on adhesive but sikaflex is amazing as a sealant. I have used it in commercial vehicle and marine applications as well as on campers.
