Take care if re-connecting pipes (E D I T =) that go to the heater at the front.
They may well have been disconnected due to a leaky heater matrix and re-connecting them could cause water to leak out from the dash, but worse could introduce airlocks into the system and a DG engine can be badly damaged by airlocks.
To check, make sure the heater is turned "ON" at the dashboard, block off one of the pipes that runs forward to the heater and blow down the other to check.

Yes I know that

It still will send water up to the heater matrix in the dash if you re-connect the feed and return pipes.
I have edited my first post a little to make it more concise

Check the cable from the heater cold/warm slider hasn't come adrift at both slider and valve ends and that it doesn't 'kink' behind the controls when you operate the slider. Are the pipes warm up to where the valve is under the van?

I don't follow you - what's the exhaust got to do with it?

Re: i dont seem to get any heat into the
By any chance, is the pipe "going nowhere" the big corrugated pipe in the back r/h/side of the engine compartment?
If so, this doesn't affect the heater in the cab. it is meant to fit over the offside downpipe and draw off heat to send to the carb. many folks don't have this connected without detriment.
As mentioned earlier, if you post a picture of the pipes, more helpful advice can be given.

Re: i dont seem to get any heat into the
Just beginning to wonder if the engine has been replaced. Possibly a watercooled put in place of an Aircooled.
