split charging conundrum

Post by gti mad man »

been having trouble with my lesuire battery going flat(tis new)
charging voltages seem a tad low so thought id investigate further

under drivers seats are 2 relays though one was linked to a dash switch(fridge) and the wire that used to goto a 2nd towing socket on the towbar,so ripped all that out as not having 2 sockets.

ok looking better now, however this leaves just one relay under the seat and this is the fridge one (goes to earth battery switch on dash and fridge) so how is my lesuire battery charging at all as unless im wrong there is no relay built into the zig unit?

so unless its just hardwired via the zig?

hi mate.

had this prob myself/ i think my relay is connected to leisure somehow?? :?: :?:
i had no 12v unless on hook up/re wired relay/ckanged the 2 fuses and hey presto/lights work.. :idea

my leisure bat now chargers ok/ and runs the 12v lighting/ if i take red wire from leisure bat(6mm dia) the lights go out.(assume from this working ok)

not sure if this helps(i do have the holdsworth wiring diagram)if you need it :?: :?:

No relay in the zig just a changover switch. Set to touring to charge leisure battery when on the move. How ever due to voltage drops through the Zig it's not the best system it would be better to fit a dedicated split charging system.

cheers mate angeloevs just pm'd me a similar answer wonder how many other people are going round thinking they have split charge when its actually just a changeover switch that barely puts 1v by the tiem its back at the lesuire battery lol

They work fine, although I use the them to switch an additional heavy duty relay for charging the battery.

The amps relate to the load they can carry.....most standard split charge relay setups with leisure batteries under 100amp/hour require the relay to be rated at least to 40amps. General consensus by those in the know, say 50amp relay or above to be safe. There are some very nice voltage sensing 70amp relays available that are just the job.
