vega recon

Post by mr_clarkson »

hi all, well with all the trouble ive been having trying to sort my engine i have decided to bite the bullet and get a replacement. was going to look for a second hand running engine that i can hear/see running in the van, then drop it out and bolt straight into mine, as there is no way i can afford a recon. however i have been offered a COMPLETE vega recon was fitted less than a year ago but van was to rotton to save so was sold for spares, i have been offered the engine for £500 (this should have carbs ect all attached so all i have to do is drop straight into mine) is £500 a fair price? assuming it is as good as it is supposed to be, also is there any plates or anything on these recon engines so i can be sure it is what he says it is?

its a 2ltr air cooled t25 by the way.

cheers
jon

Sounds like a fair price as long as you can hear it running....

what you doing with your old engine, been thinking about trying to get hold of a knackered one to try and teach myself about it

have a look at the exhaust , if its new then its a good indication that money was spent and twas looked after , if its all rusty/holed then would have just bben bodged on to new engine saving money.

also fine evidence of the service that should have been carried out and full receipts of course.

look to see if its got a thermostat fitted, another indication of the quality of the job!

did a garage fit it? if so find out who and when

I mean if its only a year since the recon i assume it hasnt done that many miles since and i would assume is still under warranty, rather than a recon that was done years and years ago that could have countless miles and no warranty.

I got a vege recon engine in the mrs beetle, they change the engine numbers with an aluminium plate over old number with their markings on it. You can get the spec if you tell vege the numbers.

If its still in the van and you have any concerns,do a quick compression test and hear it run, beyond that it should be sound.

My vans engine was rebuilt 2 years ago and done 18k since, compression on mine is about 135psi on all cylinders.
