No Power and stalling!?!?

Post by rabbids »

:? We have just had to return home, or should I say Limp home, when we were supposed to be heading for Oktoberfest in Cheddar. My 2.0L wasser auto seems to start ok and drive ok until she gets up into third and demanding some power. Then it feels like the engine is holding back and not giving all she can and struggles to get up to 60 or even 70. I decided to get off the motorway to see if everything was ok, but as I approched a set of lights she stalled. I started up again ok with no issues and continued to next set of lights when she stalled again. It seems that no matter what, there is no power after about 30-40mph and always stalls when almost at a stop or in neutral. I'm going to spend my saturday checking her over instead of enjoying a drive and some time with other members at the fest. Any pointer will be much appreciated.

First check is look at the 'in line' fuel filter as seen alongside the fuel tank (1/2 way along the vehicle) from the drivers side of the van, if this contains any sort of dirt or water it may have found its way into the carburettor which will benefit from a good clean out using carburettor cleaner and careful use of an air line...

Hi Fritz. I was checking out the posts and noticed you posted some where else about water in the fuel too, which I'm going to check for. I've had the old girl for about 3 weeks and the previous owner had to replace the gaskets several times due to cheap copies that kept failing. All of which makes me think I might have to spend some time stripping, checking, cleaning and replacing.

Blocked fuel tank breather? Try running with the fuel cap off to see if thats the issue.
Fuel pump becoming u/s? Do a flow test.
Batch of snide fuel, had you recently gassed up?
Coil lead connections?
King lead (coil to dizzy) starting to breakdown?
Just suggesting possibilities here, they are the first things I would check if coming to the vehicle on a breakdown.

I had just filled her up to the brim as we were doing a long run. She did this last weekend on a short trip and after letting her stand for about an hour she ran fine, till today. I did check the plug leads when I came of the motorway, but all seemed ok. I will check again in the day light and see how old they are. cheers. :)

Came out to her this morning and started up ok. reved her with no issues. Checked the HT leads, oil breather, water hoses, oil levels and air intake. Nothing looks degraded or needing replacement. Took her out for a run and got up to 60 and no issues at all. Going to take her out Sunday for a good run and see how it goes, but totally bafflled. :?
