Hello Everybody,
My 1987 2.1 dj stopped the other day. Called out the AA and they worked out the fuel pump had no electric so temporarily fixed a feed direct from the battery to the pump and it got me home. I need to get this fixed properly though and looking through the haynes manual it says there is a fuel pump relay in the engine bay. I'm not sure if this is the problem though as the manual says this relay also powers the injectors.
My questions are - do you think that the relay is the problem and how easy is it to get a new relay?
If it isn't the relay does anybody have any other ideas (The wiring to the pump looks OK with no obvious breaks).
Thanks as always
Graham

Re: 2.1 dj fuel pump problems
You will need to either take the vehicle to an auto electrician, who will trace the wires, and test them and the relay for power, or buy a meter yourself and work backwards from the pump to find where the 12v is stopping.
The Haynes manual has a test procedure for checking the pump, which also tests the wire from the relay to the pump. If that test fails, then the wire between the relay and pump is broken. (you have already shown that the pump still works)
The relay is likely a standard one, and should not be difficult to obtain if it is knackered, or syncrospares in devon will have some, or VW. When you switch on the ignition the relay which is in the black box on the left wall of the engine compartment, you should hear a click as the relay energises the pump. You should also hear a buzzing as the idle stabilisation system starts up.
The fuel relay is the one with the flatter lead nearest the inside of the engine.
Sorry it's a little disjointed.
Simon.
